Movie Room – Home Cinema In An Attic – Case Study

Home cinema cost is a common question ,this page should answer it

Home » Specialist Home Cinema Design and Installation » Movie Room – Home Cinema In An Attic – Case Study

Fitting a home cinema in an attic bedroom can be a great option. This is because attic rooms are often amongst the least utilised rooms in a house. Its great to give your attic spare bedroom a new lease of life as an attic movie room. This case study draws examples from several of our own home cinema projects in attic bedrooms.

Firstly – photos of three completed examples of a movie room or home cinema in an attic.

After this we will move on, with some pictures and notable points from the builds of these home cinemas

Home cinema in an attic bedroom, with a motorised screen and a starry sky ceiling

Project 1) pictured above, features  a Sony 4K SXRD projector. However for casual daytime viewing there is also a TV, which is revealed when the motorised projection screen is retracted.

Project 2) In the project pictured above the room did not have a fully vertical wall to position the projection screen on. So we created a false wall, to house the speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen.

A home cinema in an attic with a raised floor platform and two rows of seating

Project 3) In the movie room pictured above, our clients wanted to fit in the largest possible screen, in spite of the sloping ceiling to the left. So we used an acoustically transparent screen with a very narrow frame. This meant that none of the space was taken up by the front speakers and also that very little space was used up by the frame of the screen. This enabled us to maximise the size of the image.

Designing the right kind of Movie room or attic home cinema for each client.

In each of these examples of a home cinema in an attic room, we were invited to the table fairly early. In each case we prepared technical drawings of the movie room. The design drawings enabled us to work out the ideal positions of speakers, projector, screen and seating. We also used our drawings to check the audience sight lines. We always make sure that everyone will have a good view of the screen. If the movie room is going to have special features added, such as starry sky ceiling panels, we plan the sizes and positions in advance with a full set of scale drawings. This ensures that everything will fit perfectly because all potential problems are solved at the design stage.

To create each attic movie room, the next step is the first fix installation work

The first fix work for a home cinema in an attic room, usually includes creating some form of timber frame. This is  designed to provide routes for the cabling and to form ideal shapes. It also provides spaces for the various lighting and acoustic elements. These elements can include LED Strips, Star Ceiling, downlights and speakers. The timber framework can also provide a good fixing in the right positions for the projector and for the screen.

In some cases the timber frame will be lined with plasterboard and then plastered. If you don’t want the dust and mess which comes with plastering, we can use MDF sheets to cover the framework. If we have used MDF, then we fill and sand to get perfect joins and we paint the movie room.

A home cinema in an attic bedroom – Why it’s so much better than any large TV

At UK Home Cinemas, we have designed attic cinema rooms for clients throughout the UK. We are specialists in creating the best home cinema for each budget. We love projectors, because home cinema movie rooms with projectors provide a truly immersive and magical experience.  In our view this is beyond what is usually possible with a Large TV.

We think that the best home cinema rooms are places where people find themselves briefly forgetting that the real world even exists. So for that to happen regularly the room has to provide an environment which is especially immersive.

Why is an attic movie room so much more immersive with a projector

In our experience, one of the biggest disadvantages of a projector can turn into a major advantage. This is when it comes to creating spaces where reality will naturally become suspended. When watched in the dark the projectors which we use, produce huge images with picture quality which would beat all but the most expensive TV. However you do have to watch without too much ambient light. So that’s what you do, You sit in total comfort in a darkened home cinema in an attic room. Light streams over your head onto the projection screen.

You hear and even feel high quality sound seemingly from all directions. The only thing you see is the superb images which almost fill your field of view. So you forget everything else at least for a few minutes at a time. This is the experience which a home cinema in an attic room will provide. An experience way beyond watching even the best flat screen TV. Once you have enjoyed a well designed home cinema, anything else will be a step down.

Why our clients are delighted with their movie room – We listen to the client’s priorities.

Budgets vary greatly from project to project, but at UK Home Cinemas we intentionally keep our own overheads very low. Our aim is always to deliver the best possible attic home cinema or movie room for any given budget. So we tailor the priorities of each project according to the client’s wishes. In some cases our clients have asked us to make the room aesthetics the top priority.  For other projects our clients have opted for the best performing Audio-visual equipment, but have made only small changes to the look of the room. After decades of experience in the design of home cinema rooms, we are able to advise our clients where savings can be made. We also know where its best not to compromise.

Projector specifications can be very misleading – we can advise you.

One point about projectors for a home cinema in an attic , or for any room generally. If you plan to buy one please talk to us. There are pitfalls with some of the projector technologies on the market. In our experience there are some aspects of projector choice where its fine to compromise. But there are other aspects where its best not to. We have lost count of the number of home cinemas we have created with great projectors. So we will be happy to advise you even if you don’t end up buying a projector from us.

Raised floor platforms for a home cinema in an attic (or any other room type)

If there is to be a 2nd row of seats in the home cinema or movie room, we build the raised floor platform for the 2nd row of seats. Again we do this in exact accordance with our design drawings.  In the case of these examples of a home cinema in an attic, only example 3 had a floor platform and a second rows of seats.

We sometimes build our raised floor platforms off site in sections, which we can fix together in the room. This makes the on site installation work slightly more efficient and can save a little on cost

Customer Testimonial from the project featured in the video above

After the project was completed we received this very kind message from our delighted client
Richard and his excellent team created an absolutely amazing cinema room for us, beyond our expectations and within our budget. They were polite, tidy and worked diligently. Can’t recommend them highly enough. If you’re considering making a cinema room, this company is the best, so professional and a pleasure to deal with. We’ve had our cinema room for a couple of years now, and we absolutely love it, as do friends and family..

Richard’s expertise and consultative approach, makes him a real pleasure to work with. The project turned our double garage into a home cinema room run via Control 4. The garage itself posed a number of constraints (location of the consumer unit, water cylinder, heating controls, etc), which Richard worked through to provide us with a number of options. Their approach encompassed collaboratively working with the building contractor, carpet provider, and cinema seating provider. UK Home Cinemas fitted us the perfect home cinema, and the end result exceeded our expectations. We cannot recommend them Richard and the team highly enough.

Richard from UK home cinemas is great at what he does and pleasure to work with. Richard spent countless hours discussing our design to ensure we could use our new room for all activities we wanted. He was very patient showing and discussing with us potential options and alternatives for what was novel idea and fairly complex design. We had to take into account number of limitation and particularities with heating, air conditioning, lighting and existing speaker and network installation. Richard designed, built and installed perfect acoustic housings for our in-wall speakers as well as number of other features. He and his team worked tirelessly to ensure we get results we wanted. Richard and his team worked collaboratively with subcontractors and our builder.
We would highly recommend UK home cinemas for any media room installation project.
