Is a bigger screen alway better?
At UK Home Cinemas, we take a technical yet practical approach to selecting the right screen size. A well-balanced setup ensures an immersive experience without causing discomfort and fatigue or compromising image quality.
Viewing Distance & Angle – The ideal screen size is based, on multiple factors such as the screen wall, with on a recommended industry standards from THX and SMPTE, based of 36° to 62° degrees from the centre viewing point. With reference at 45° at viewing angle. This ensures a cinematic feel without straining the eyes or making the image appear too large to take in comfortably.
Seating Position – Whether you have a single-row layout or multiple rows with tiered seating, we calculate the correct screen size and position to provide a clear, unobstructed viewing from every seating position.
Projector Throw Distance & Lens Shift – Every projector has a specific throw ratio, determining how large of an image it can project from a given distance. We ensure your screen size matches the projector’s capabilities while making use of lens shift and zoom features to achieve proper alignment.
Ambient Light & HDR – A larger screen may require a higher-lumen projector to maintain the optimum Nit Brightness to achieve a HDR image (<80 Nits).
When you buy a projector and projection screen package from us, will assess factors like the room lighting conditions, to ensure the best possible image quality.
When setting up your dream home cinema, one of the biggest decisions is choosing the right screen aspect ratio.
Do you go with the standard 16:9, which matches most TV content, or the ultra-wide 2.35:1, designed for a truly cinematic experience?
Each has its strengths and drawbacks, and the best choice depends on what you enjoy watch and how immersive you want your cinema to be!.
A 16:9 screen is the same shape as most TVs and is ideal for binge watching your favourite TV series, sports and gaming. If your content is mostly in this format, a 16:9 screen ensures no wasted space and no black bars.
However, most big blockbuster movies are shot in 2.35:1 (Cinemascope), a super wide image ratio, Which will cause black bars at the top and bottom; which can reduce immersion.
A 2.35:1 screen is designed for films shot in Cinemascope, giving you a wider, much more immersive image without black bars. If you’re a movie lover, this is the ultimate way to recreate a true cinema experience at home, viewing the movie just as the director intended.
However, TV shows and 16:9 content will then have black bars on the left and right sides of the image.
If you choose a 2.35:1 screen, you’ll need a projector with a motorised lens and lens memory settings. This allows the projectors lens to zoom in and out, switching between different aspect ratios, at a press of a button. Without this feature, you’ll be stuck dealing with content not fitting properly and causing black bars.
We can help you choose a subtle projector for your room and screen.
One of the best ways to manage aspect ratio changes is using a Mad VR Envy, a incredibly powerful video processor that can automatically detect the contents aspect ratio, and adjust your projector’s settings.
